PIERRE MARGARa

MEGEVAN SCULPTOR

A passionate sculptor for nearly fifty years , Pierre Margara possesses a fabulous mastery that allows him to bring forth from matter beauty , purity , and serenity .

His artistic process is centered on purification and fluidity . He works with forms and curves, choosing to transform or remove certain elements of being to better illuminate other aspects. This approach is an invitation: by freeing the form from the non-essential, he allows the spectator to give free rein to their imagination and emotions .

BIO

An artist's life

Born in 1946 in Aix les Bains, in Savoie, Pierre Margara comes from a modest family.

As he likes to recall, his father did not give him a castle wing to indulge his passion. Grandson of a Piedmontese, son of a railway worker and a housewife, Pierre Margara is the eldest of three children.

He is in fourth grade at high school when he starts skipping classes. At the end of his arguments, his father sends him as an apprentice to one of his friends, Master sculptor Rosso, specialized in furniture decoration. For Pierre, it's a revelation. He loves "hitting the material", giving it life. He is talented and learns quickly. Four years later, in 1966, with his CAP in hand, he abandons craftsmanship for art and holds his first exhibition.

He is 20 years old. In 1970, aware that he needs a more upscale setting to achieve the notoriety that every artist dreams of, he chooses to settle in Megève, where he is considered one of the "stars" of the resort, alongside Émile Allais or Jean-Paul Allard the creator of the ski suit, Jean-Louis and Marc Sibuet the famous restaurateurs of the most upscale station in Haute-Savoie or even the great chefs, Marc Veyrat and Emmanuel Renaut.

Since then, his reputation has crossed borders. Not only those of his dear Savoyard region, but those of France and then Europe. Collectors from around the world have acquired his sculptures and continue to enrich their artistic heritage with Pierre's new creations.

All his originals are in wood, walnut or linden, even when it comes to monumental works for which he refuses any modeling, so much does he need each chisel stroke to express his immense sensitivity. Direct carving is, for him, the true path to sculpture. He sometimes compares his art to theater, where each performance is unique.
